John O Foods was born from a passion of connecting with the land and water. Five generations later, that passion is stronger than ever. While we specialize in catching and preparing delicious sweet water fish, we’re also a company whose intentions extend far deeper than the Canadian lakes that surround us. We are powered by innovation. We are stewards of sustainability. And we’re driven by the great families who work with us day in and day out—many of whom are multi-generational.

Our highly trained team and stringent quality procedures ensure each product that leaves our facility exceeds customer expectations. 

We take pride in our state-of-the-art facility that industry insiders have called the best in North America. However, we believe it’s our team’s commitment to excellence and continuous improvement that makes the difference.  

Additionally, our list of certifications confirms our promise to optimal food safety procedures: Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), QMP, Import Certification, Export Certification, and GFSI (Global Food Safety Institute). 

Instant Ice Program

John O’s Foods elects to participate in the ‘Instant Ice Program,’ which ensures we deliver the best quality product to our customers.

As soon as the fish are harvested from the lake, they are submersed in insulated totes with abundant flaked ice. The totes are capped and secured with a government strap that can only be removed at the facility by a government authority at our plant.

With the ‘Instant Ice Program’ the warmest the catch ever reaches is the temperature of the water from which it is caught! 

We are the only fish company on Lake Erie that partakes in this program despite the extra cost. Quality is that important to us. 


We recognize that we are more than just a business, we are also a part of an ecosystem that relies on us to make ethical and environmental choices. 

John O's Foods believes in sustainability on an environmental, economic and community level. We do our best to give back in each of these areas through the following: 

  • Selling products certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council 

  • Involvement in the Essex Region Conservation Foundation 



John O's Foods goes to great lengths to ensure each of our products is sustainably harvested for generations to come. Without our resources, we simply don't have a business.

Our Walleye/Pickerel and Yellow Perch are certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. Every pound of every species caught from Lake Erie is recorded and shared with the Ministry of Natural Resources. To learn more, click here.
